America spends more on healthcare than any nation on earth, and still ranks last among its peers.
It’s time to put patients first.
Help us educate, amplify real stories, and drive meaningful change for a healthcare system that puts patients first.
American doctors and nurses are among the best in the world. Even with the lowest-ranked health system of 10 wealthy nations, the U.S. ranks second on the care process itself (Commonwealth Fund).
The problem isn’t the people providing care. It’s a system that too often rewards billing over healing, denials over treatment, and profit over patients.
The result: families choosing between a prescription and groceries. Treatments a doctor ordered and an insurer refused. People who did everything right and still went broke getting sick.
Patients Before Profit exists to change that.
Pick one. Every one of them matters.

This year, millions of Americans opened their insurance renewals and found the price had jumped. After enhanced federal tax credits expired at the end of 2025, premium payments for marketplace enrollees rose an average of 58%, from $113 to $178 a month (KFF). Marketplace enrollment fell for the first time in seven years, the largest drop since the marketplaces opened (KFF).
And it isn’t over. Insurers have proposed a median 15% premium increase for 2027 (Reuters via U.S. News), and the Congressional Budget Office projects more than 14 million more uninsured Americans by 2034 (KFF analysis of CBO).
These aren’t abstractions. They’re your neighbors, your coworkers, your family. And they’re decisions being made right now, which means they can still be changed.
Statistics show the scale. Stories show the cost. We’re building a national collection of American healthcare experiences, so the people who make decisions can hear from the people who live with them.
For nearly two decades, Garrett Soames worked across healthcare: emergency and urgent care, the COVID-19 response, healthcare leadership, and healthcare work in Malawi, Africa. What he saw convinced him the system wasn’t failing by accident. It was working as designed, just not for patients.
He wrote Flatlined: How Profit Broke American Healthcare to explain how we got here. He founded Patients Before Profit so Americans could do something about it.
About 8 in 10 Americans say healthcare is extremely or very important to them personally, including 9 in 10 Democrats and three-quarters of Republicans (poll reported by FOX 9). Nobody votes to go broke getting sick. That’s where we start.
